“Does this actually hurt?” It’s the first question almost every new patient asks before booking. Good news: for most people, acupuncture doesn’t hurt the way you’re picturing.
Why the fear exists: We associate needles with vaccinations. But acupuncture needles are solid, hair-thin, and slide between tissue instead of cutting through it — nothing like an injection.
What it actually feels like: A quick pinch on insertion, then often a dull ache, warmth, or mild tingling once placed (a sign it’s working). Many patients feel nothing at all.
Your first visit: Expect a 15–20 minute intake conversation about your health and goals, then 15–30 minutes resting with 5–20 needles in place while soft music plays. Total time: 45–60 minutes. Most people leave relaxed, sometimes a little sleepy, occasionally energized.
Comfort tips: Eat lightly beforehand, wear loose clothing, skip caffeine, and speak up if anything feels sharp — practitioners adjust instantly.
Is it safe? Yes, when done by a licensed practitioner with sterile, single-use needles — standard at any reputable clinic. Side effects, if any, are usually just minor bruising.
Nervous about needles is normal. It shouldn’t be what keeps you from trying something that could actually help. Book your first session at our Brampton clinic and we’ll walk you through every step.
